Invisalign is one of the most popular teeth-straightening systems worldwide, utilizing removable, clear, BPA-free plastic trays to discreetly realign teeth.

Originally introduced into the US in 1999, Invisalign is the result of decades of research and development that continues to this day. Its popularity is largely due to the discreet nature of treatment. Additionally, it can correct a wide range of common and complex orthodontic problems and is extremely versatile.

In this guide, we provide an overview of Invisalign and the treatments available, as well as some information on why these aligners can be a good option for teeth straightening.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a removable aligner system. Instead of fixed brackets, wires, and elastics, your teeth are gradually straightened using a series of custom-made aligner trays made from thin, durable plastic. These are computer-designed to place exactly the right amount of pressure on each tooth, gently yet firmly moving them into the correct alignment.

Treatment couldn’t be simpler; you wear each set of aligner trays for ten days to two weeks, after which you discard them for the next aligner set in your treatment plan.

Misalignments and Bite Problems Addressed by Invisalign

Invisalign can address numerous orthodontic issues, including:

  • Overcrowded and rotated teeth.
  • Unevenly spaced teeth.
  • Open bites.
  • Underbites.
  • Crossbites.
  • Overbites.

It’s essential to note that Invisalign may not be suitable for everyone. Some orthodontic problems are more complex and are best addressed with fixed braces.

When you visit NYC Dentistry Center, we can assess your bite and determine your suitability for Invisalign. If we feel it isn’t the right system for you, we can suggest an alternative way to straighten your teeth safely and effectively.

How Long Will Treatment Take?

Once you have decided to straighten your teeth, you probably want to see results as quickly as possible. The time required to complete your treatment plan depends on the degree of tooth repositioning needed.

Several Invisalign systems are available, and if you only require minor tooth movements affecting your front teeth, you could complete treatment in just a few months. Other, more complex issues can take longer, sometimes 18 months or more. Generally, many people will complete treatment within a year.

Below is a brief overview of some of the systems available.

A consultation with our Invisalign-certified dentist will help identify which system is most suitable for your needs.

  1. Invisalign Express

Invisalign Express utilizes just five aligner sets. It can be used for cases of orthodontic relapse, where someone has previously worn braces but seen their teeth shift position over time, or when there are only minor issues with spacing or crowding.

  1. Invisalign Lite

Invisalign Lite utilizes 14 aligners to correct minor misalignments, and treatment can be completed in as little as six months. It is perfect for mild cases of overcrowding and spacing. Additional aligners can be purchased if required.

  1. Invisalign Moderate

Invisalign Moderate uses up to 20 aligners and is designed for mild to moderate cases of misalignment.

  1. Invisalign Comprehensive

This Invisalign system is designed to treat more complex issues and includes unlimited sets of aligners, as well as additional aligners, for up to five years. You may need this package if you have moderate to severe overcrowding and spacing issues, as well as more complex malocclusion conditions requiring correction.

Why Choose Invisalign?

There are several reasons for choosing Invisalign, which include:

  • You receive a personalized treatment plan that includes computer-generated images showing the predicted results. This ability to see the treatment outcome before you buy can be tremendously helpful in deciding whether Invisalign is right for you.
  • Many insurance policies cover Invisalign. The degree of coverage can depend on your policy and whether the treatment provides oral health benefits rather than results that are cosmetically oriented.
  • Invisalign is designed to be more comfortable, with smooth, plastic aligners that don’t have any parts that can dig painfully into cheeks and gums. With Invisalign, pain or discomfort is minimal.
  • Results can be fast, in as little as six months.
  • Relatively few checkups are required, and these are quick, as there are no brackets or wires to adjust.
  • Braces repairs are unnecessary due to the lack of brackets or wires.
  • The aligners are removable for eating, so there are no dietary restrictions. You can eat whatever you wish during treatment.
  • Because the aligners are removed for brushing and flossing, it’s easy to maintain good oral hygiene throughout treatment.
  • Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. You need to look very closely to see them.
  • Invisalign treatment fits easily into everyday life, with minimal disruption to normal activities.

The Potential Oral Health Benefits of Treatment

Many people choose Invisalign because they want to improve the appearance of their teeth. While Invisalign can create more aesthetically appealing smiles, resulting in teeth that are beautifully and attractively aligned, it can also provide oral health benefits.

Simply put, straighter teeth are easier to keep clean. If you struggle to brush and floss your teeth because they are tightly packed or overlapping, or have spaces between them that trap food, Invisalign could improve your oral health.
