What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a removable orthodontic system that utilizes clear aligner trays, custom-designed to apply a precise amount of pressure to the teeth, causing them to move into their correct positions gradually.

The system uses a series of aligner trays, and each set is worn for approximately two weeks before being replaced with the next set. Each set continues to move teeth until they are straight.

What Is an Overbite?

Usually, when you bite your upper and lower front teeth together, the upper teeth will cover the lower teeth slightly. An overbite occurs if the overlap is several millimeters, so more of your lower front teeth are covered when you bite together.

An overbite is not the same as an overjet, as with an overjet, the teeth protrude or stick out.

Why Do Some People Have an Overbite?

There are several reasons why some people will have an overbite, which can include:

  • Genetic factors, so if your parents or siblings have an overbite, it’s likely to affect you as well.
  • Oral habits like thumb or finger sucking, tongue thrusting, or nail biting.
  • Teeth grinding and clenching, a condition called bruxism.

Some overbites are so mild that they may not need orthodontic treatment. Other times, they can cause issues.

When Does an Overbite Need Orthodontic Treatment?

It could be worth considering orthodontic treatment if your overbite is causing any of the following problems, including:

  • Excessive wear and tear on teeth that is eroding tooth enamel.
  • Dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Issues biting and chewing comfortably.
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder, a jaw joint problem that can cause symptoms like headaches and earache.
  • An overbite that affects your breathing or speech.

When to Consider Invisalign for Overbites

Invisalign can be a suitable treatment if your overbite is mild to moderate. If you have a more severe overbite, you may need a different option, which could include fixed braces.

A consultation with our Invisalign dentist can help determine if clear aligners are suitable for your overbite and, if so, how long the treatment will take to complete.

What to Expect When You Use Invisalign for Overbites

The treatment process is smooth and straightforward, and the following is a brief outline of what to expect.

Step One: Consultation & Diagnostics

Every Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation, where we examine your teeth and bite to assess the degree of your overbite and determine if Invisalign is a suitable option. We must also make sure your teeth are healthy and strong enough to move safely and effectively.

A 3D scan of your teeth, along with digital X-rays and photographs, allows us to plan your treatment using Invisalign’s software. Part of this process involves creating digital images that show how your teeth are expected to look after treatment is completed.

We will discuss the treatment plan with you, and if you approve it, your aligners will be computer-generated.

Step Two: Invisalign Treatment

Our Invisalign dentist will show you how to insert and remove the aligners and care for them, which is extremely easy, as you simply need to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day, preferably only removing them for meals and dental care.

We will inform you about how often you need to change your aligners for the next set and discuss what to expect as your treatment progresses. Generally, each set is used for 10 to 14 days.

Step Three: Invisalign Checkups

You will need to return to our dental office every 6 to 8 weeks just for a quick checkup. These visits will be brief, painless, and non-invasive.

Step Four: Retainers

After correcting your overbite, you will need to wear retainers to maintain the results. Invisalign retainers are similar to the aligner trays, but they are more comfortable to wear.

Invisalign can be a useful option for correcting mild or more moderate overbites, providing predictable results. The system is easy to use and minimally disruptive to everyday life.
