What Is a Same-Day Crown?
A same-day crown looks exactly like a crown created in the dental lab and is entirely metal-free. These restorations are created using CAD/CAM digital technology. Your tooth is prepared in the same way as for a normal crown. We use a small handheld scanner to scan the prepared tooth, creating a detailed 3-D digital image.
Our dentist uses this 3-D image to design your new crown. Once the design is ready, it is transmitted to our on-site milling machine, and a block of pure porcelain is selected in a shade that matches your natural teeth.
Your new crown is then milled to our dentist’s design. Once ready, it is carefully hand-finished and checked, and is ready to fit.
Benefits of Same-Day Crowns
The major benefit of the same-day crown is that you will not need a second appointment. Your new crown can be ready to fit in as few as a few hours. You will not need a temporary crown, as you will leave our dental office with your permanent restoration in place.
Using a digital dental impression and CAD/CAM technology ensures that your new same-day crown is precision-made, fitting over your tooth exactly. The result is a high-quality, natural-looking restoration made from a durable, beautiful material.
Who Is a Candidate for Same-Day Crowns?
There are several situations in which we may recommend a same-day crown instead of a conventionally made crown.
- If you require a dental crown to protect a decayed, infected, or broken tooth, you may be a good candidate to have a same-day crown.
- We might suggest this procedure if you have an older, failing crown that needs replacing.
- Same-day crowns can be used to protect the tooth after root canal therapy.
We may not recommend CEREC crowns in Midtown Manhattan if you require other restorations, such as dental bridges or veneers. Sometimes, more complex restorations are best completed in a dental lab under the guidance of our master technician, even though the process may take longer and require a second visit.
The Same Day Crown Procedure Step-By-Step
Step One: Consultation & Tooth Preparation
The procedure is similar to a conventional crown preparation. After an initial consultation, we can prepare the tooth using a local anesthetic to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Step Two: Digital Scan
A digital scan is taken of the tooth, a process that is quick, painless, and non-invasive. Our handheld scanner captures thousands of digital images of the tooth preparation, which are stitched together to create a virtual 3D model.
Step Three: Digital Crown Design
Our dentist utilizes specialized CAD/CAM software to digitally design your tooth using the virtual 3D model of your mouth taken with our handheld scanner. Once the design is ready, it is transmitted to our on-site milling machine.
Step Four: In-Office Milling of Your Crown
A block of ceramic material is selected in a shade corresponding to your natural tooth color. It is placed into the milling machine so your crown can be precision-made. It doesn’t take long, and once ready, the crown is hand-finished, checked, and is then ready to fit.
Step Five: Crown Placement & Final Adjustments
The final stage is for our dentist to try the crown in your mouth to ensure it fits perfectly and make any necessary adjustments before bonding it to your tooth.
Caring for Your Same-Day Crown
Your same-day crown can be cared for in the same way as your natural teeth and any other crowns.
- Brush it at least twice daily and floss around it every day.
- Treat it as gently as your natural teeth, so avoid crunching down on hard objects like ice or pens.
- Schedule regular dental exams and hygiene appointments so we can check its condition and clean it professionally.
