What Is a Denture Repair?
A denture repair is a service that will fix a broken or failing denture. Common types of denture repairs include:
- Denture relines.
- Replacing missing or chipped teeth.
- Mending fractured or broken denture bases.
- Repairing broken clasps on partial dentures.
- Emergency denture repairs.
- Denture Relines
A denture reline is a process to help the fitting surface of a denture fit more securely over your gums. When you first receive a new denture, it should fit reasonably securely, but over time, the shape of your gums and the bone underneath will change.
Adding more material to the fitting surface is an affordable way to ensure your denture fits more securely. Two types of relines are available.
- A soft reline is where we add a softer material to the denture base, ensuring it fits over your gums more comfortably. This may be a good solution if you find your denture uncomfortable or painful to wear, but the soft material can be trickier to care for and requires good maintenance to ensure it remains hygienic.
- A hard reline is where we add new acrylic material to the fitting surface of the denture base. The harder material is more durable than a soft reline, longer-lasting, and easier to keep clean and hygienic.
- Replacing Missing or Chipped Teeth
If you chip a denture tooth or lose one entirely, do not worry, as we can easily replace it. We maintain a large inventory of denture teeth and can offer a suitable match.
The old tooth is removed, and a new denture tooth is inserted and secured in place with gum-colored acrylic that matches the denture base.
- Mending Fractured or Broken Denture Bases
It’s not unusual for a denture base to develop a crack or to fracture in half entirely. We use a dental impression of your mouth to professionally mend your denture, removing the cracked or broken material and replacing it with new denture acrylic.
- Repairing Broken Clasps on Partial Dentures
A broken clasp on a partial denture will be mended using a model of your mouth, so we can create a new metal clasp that fits exactly around the tooth and is securely embedded into the denture base
- Emergency Denture Repairs
Our dental office offers emergency denture repair services, as we understand you want to get it mended as soon as possible. Ideally, we aim for a same-day denture, ensuring you will not be left without your teeth for any length of time. This includes partial denture repairs.
Benefits of Professional Denture Repair
We understand that you want to get your denture repaired as soon as possible, but please don’t attempt to repair it at home. You will not be able to use the proper materials and techniques, which risks damaging the denture irreparably. In contrast, the benefits of choosing a professional denture repair include:
- A cost-effective solution, as denture repairs are extremely affordable.
- Restoring comfort and function so you can wear your denture without pain or any risk of sore spots and can bite and chew efficiently.
- We use professional-quality materials and techniques, and qualified dental professionals mend your dentures.
- A fast turnaround, as many repairs can be completed on the same day.
The Denture Repair Process Step-By-Step
A denture repair is a straightforward process, as outlined below.
Step One: Initial Denture Assessment
When you damage or break a denture, our dentist can assess it professionally to determine the best course of action for repair.
Step Two: Repair Recommendations
After assessing your denture, we can provide a detailed repair plan that informs you of the cost, time required to complete the repair, and any additional recommendations.
Step Three: Professional Repair In-Office or at Our Dental Lab
The next stage is to prepare your denture and, if necessary, take a dental impression of your mouth for the repair. We may complete some denture repairs in our dental office, but more complex breakages will be sent to our dental lab for professional repair.
Step Four: Fitting and Adjusting Your Repair Denture
The final step is to fit your repair denture and make any adjustments to ensure it feels comfortable, strong, and secure.
When Dentures Cannot Be Repaired
Unfortunately, some dentures may not be repairable. This might be the case if you have several breaks or multiple fractures. Dentures also have a limited lifespan, typically lasting 5 to 7 years before they need to be replaced.
If we determine that you require a new denture, we may be able to complete a temporary repair on your existing denture, allowing you to use it while your new dentures are being custom-made.
Caring for Dentures to Avoid Breakages
Once your denture is repaired, we can review your cleaning and maintenance routine. Proper care of your denture will help it last longer and avoid cracks and breakages.
Below are some simple tips to follow.
- Make sure you always clean your dentures over a bowl of water or a towel so that if you do drop them, they are less likely to break.
- Clean your dentures in cool water, as using hot water could warp them.
- Remember to soak your dentures when you aren’t wearing them. Allowing them to dry out could also cause them to warp.
Schedule regular dental checkups, even if you have no natural teeth remaining, so we can assess the condition of your dentures and provide any necessary maintenance.
It is essential to visit a dentist regularly in Midtown East, even if you have lost all your teeth, as we still need to examine the condition of your gums and oral tissues to ensure you have no signs of oral disease or other issues, such as fungal infections.
