What Is a Same-Day Denture?
Same-day dentures, also known as immediate dentures or one-day dentures, can be fabricated before your natural teeth are removed. It ensures you will have teeth during the healing process and while your more permanent dentures are being custom-made. You may wear your same-day denture for 3 to 6 months or longer, depending on your individual needs.
We know many people fear being left without teeth, and a same-day denture ensures this will not happen. A same-day denture is a temporary denture that we can provide soon after natural teeth are extracted, generally on the same day. Your immediate denture will look reasonably good, restoring your ability to smile and eat.
You will wear this denture for several months after your teeth are extracted. Wearing the denture helps protect your gums while they heal and ensures you can continue with everyday activities, such as eating and talking, comfortably and confidently.
As your gums and the jawbone heal after tooth extraction, they will change shape. This is why we recommend a same-day denture during the healing process, and we may need to adjust it to fit more securely several times during the healing period.
Types of Same-Day Dentures
Immediate prosthodontics can restore either localized or widespread tooth loss immediately following oral surgery. A partial same-day denture is custom-configured to fit around your remaining natural teeth, seamlessly replacing a few missing units in a specific area.
If you require a complete clearance of an upper or lower arch, a complete same-day denture replaces the entire set of teeth, providing immediate structural support for your lips and cheeks right after your extractions.
Who Is a Candidate for Same-Day Dentures?
This treatment is primarily designed for patients who can’t accommodate the typical multi-week waiting period associated with traditional prosthetic fabrication. It’s an ideal solution if you are facing the removal of multiple failing teeth but need to maintain your professional and social routine without any visible gaps in your smile.
If missing teeth are currently impacting your speech, nutrition, or self-confidence, this immediate approach bridges the gap between surgery and long-term healing.
What Are the Benefits of Same-Day Dentures?
Benefits can include:
- Immediate restoration of oral function and your smile.
- Your immediate denture will help maintain your facial structure, especially if you have lost multiple teeth.
- Wearing an immediate denture can help you adjust to wearing permanent dentures more easily because the facial muscles in your cheeks and lips will get used to holding the denture in place. You will be more accustomed to eating and speaking with the denture.
Not everyone will want a same-day denture. For example, if you only lose one or two teeth and the gap isn’t immediately visible, you might be inclined to do without teeth until you can have a permanent denture made.
However, leaving a gap in your smile for several months while your gums heal could destabilize natural teeth. These teeth may begin to shift toward the empty space, becoming loose and altering your bite. It may be tricky to correct these problems later.
Wearing an immediate denture helps ensure remaining natural teeth cannot shift position, protecting them and your bite.
Same-Day Denture Procedure Step-By-Step
You will need to visit our dental office before your tooth extraction is scheduled so that we can create your immediate denture, which will be ready to fit on the same day your teeth are removed.
Step One: Initial Assessment & Consultation
An initial assessment and consultation will determine the number of teeth that need to be removed. If there is a chance that any natural teeth can be saved, then we can discuss a suitable treatment plan with you.
Step Two: Dental Impressions
We will need to take dental impressions of your existing teeth and record important dimensions, such as the height between your upper and lower jaws and your midline. We will also assess the color and shape of your natural teeth so we can choose denture teeth that will closely replicate them.
Step Three: Fabricating Your Same-Day Denture
These dental impressions are used to make your same-day denture. The models created from them are adapted and reshaped, removing the natural teeth that will be extracted so your same-day denture can be made.
Step Four: Tooth Extraction and Same-Day Denture Placement
When you return to our dental office for your tooth extraction, we will already have your same-day denture ready to fit soon afterward. We may make some minor adjustments to the denture to help it fit more comfortably.
Same-Day Denture Adjustments During Healing
As your gums heal, we will suggest scheduling follow-up checkups to ensure the fit of your same-day dentures is correct and make any necessary adjustments. During this process, we reline the fitting surface of the denture, adding more material to accommodate the changing shape of your gums.
Limitations of Same-Day Dentures
You will wear your same-day dentures for several months, but they are only designed to be temporary and will require periodic adjustments as your gums heal and any swelling subsides.
These dentures do not provide as precise a fit as your permanent dentures. When we create your more permanent dentures, you should find they look and feel very comfortable, providing good functionality.
Caring for Same-Day Dentures
Our dental office will provide precise instructions on how to care for your same-day denture, and we are always available if you have any further questions. Below is some general advice to follow.
Initially, we recommend leaving it in your mouth for at least 24 hours after surgery to help control bleeding and initiate the healing process.
On day two, you can begin gently removing the denture twice daily. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and clean the denture thoroughly using a soft denture brush and denture cleaner.
After cleaning your denture, it’s important to reinsert it immediately, as otherwise your gums may start to swell, and it would be awkward to replace the denture later.
We can advise you on when it’s safe to begin removing your denture at night. At this point, you will need to clean it thoroughly and store it in water.
