What are Clear Ceramic Braces?
Ceramic braces are fixed onto teeth for the duration of treatment and work similarly to traditional metal braces. Because the brackets are clear or tooth colored, they are much more discreet. We may recommend clear braces for adults who need precise tooth movements, provided by fixed braces, but are looking for a less visible option than traditional metal braces.
How Do Clear Braces Work?
Clear braces work in the same way as ordinary metal fixed braces. The brackets are fitted onto teeth and can be tooth colored or clear. Very thin wires power them, and you could have a ceramic brace with white wires that are designed to blend in with your natural tooth color.
Pros and Cons of Clear Ceramic Braces
Pros can include the following.
- Ceramic braces are much less visible than metal braces since the brackets are clear or tooth colored.
- Clear braces can move teeth quickly, as they work continuously to straighten teeth.
- Because these braces are fixed, they are suitable for more complex cases of misalignment or malocclusion.
- Clear braces will not interfere with any imaging tests, such as an MRI, and do not need to be removed.
- Ceramic braces are more suitable for people with metal allergies.
Potential cons of treatment can include the following.
- Clear brace brackets are less durable than metal, so they can sometimes break or fracture.
- Because the braces are more fragile, they move teeth more slowly than metal braces.
- Clear brace brackets can become stained and will remain discolored unless they are replaced.
- Some people may find they experience gum sensitivity since ceramic brackets are bigger than the metal brackets.
- Because ceramic brackets are larger than metal brackets, they can be trickier to clean around thoroughly.
- Ceramic braces are more expensive than metal braces.
When to Consider Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces can be a great choice if you have all your adult teeth and are looking for a discreet tooth straightening solution. They are ideal for anyone with a customer-facing career or who doesn’t want to draw attention to their orthodontic treatment.
Clear or Ceramic Braces Treatment Process Step-By-Step
The treatment process is very similar to that of ordinary fixed braces, and the following is a brief overview of what to expect.
Step One: Consultation & Digital Imaging
An initial consultation is necessary to assess the issues requiring correction and to discuss your goals and objectives for treatment. Digital imaging may include both ordinary and panoramic dental X-rays, which allow us to view all your teeth in a single image. We may also recommend a cone beam CT scan.
Digital imaging allows us to plan your treatment step-by-step, determining where each bracket should be fitted.
Step Two: Placement of Ceramic Brackets
After your treatment plan is finalized, the clear brackets are bonded onto your teeth using a special cement. Once they are all in place, thin metal or tooth-colored wires are attached to the brackets. Elastics are added to keep the wires firmly in position. These elastics can be clear or colored.
Before you leave, we will provide clear instructions on how to clean your braces, including the best tools to use to remove food and plaque from around the brackets and wires.
Step Three: Regular Adjustments
You will need to return to NYC Dentistry Center regularly so we can adjust and tighten your braces as needed, continuing to align your teeth gradually.
Living with Clear Braces
After any braces are fitted, it’s normal to experience mild discomfort and slight tenderness. These side effects should subside after a few days as your teeth become accustomed to the braces, but in the meantime, over-the-counter pain relief can help manage the discomfort.
Fixed braces do require some dietary adjustments, as you must avoid foods that are hard or crunchy, which could damage the brackets or wires. Because clear braces can become stained, it’s a good idea to avoid dark colored foods and beverages, or to brush your teeth soon afterward. For the same reason, it’s best not to smoke.
