If you have gum pain in one spot, it may be due to:

  • Food impacted around a tooth.
  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Periodontal disease.
  • Dental abscess.

Food Impacted around the Tooth

A swollen gum around a specific tooth can be due to something as simple as an impacted piece of food. If food becomes stuck around the gum and is not removed through regular brushing and flossing, it can cause inflammation and increase the risk of cavities.

In this case, the remedy could be as simple as gently flossing around the tooth to remove the impacted food.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Poor dental hygiene can allow dental plaque and tartar to accumulate around the tooth, resulting in swollen, tender gum tissue. Over time, this can increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Other symptoms of poor oral hygiene can include:

  • Red, swollen gum tissue around teeth.
  • Bad breath.
  • Bleeding during brushing and flossing or at other times.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease often occurs due to poor oral hygiene, where plaque and tartar have accumulated around the teeth. The bacteria in plaque and tartar produce toxins that infect and inflame the gums, causing swelling and gum pain.

Signs of periodontal disease can include:

  • Gum recession so teeth start to look longer.
  • Teeth begin to feel loose or wobbly, and that can be a change to your bite.
  • Pus buildup between gums and teeth.

Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a potentially serious problem, resulting from bacteria building up inside the tooth, an issue known as a periapical abscess, or between the tooth root and the gum, which is referred to as a periodontal abscess.

The infection can spread into the surrounding tissues. Without treatment, a dental abscess can develop into a severe infection that can spread to the head and neck, potentially becoming life-threatening.

A dental abscess can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Severe pain affecting the tooth or surrounding gum.
  • Pain that spreads into the jaw, neck, or ear, and which can worsen when lying down.
  • Tooth discolouration.
  • A loose tooth.
  • Sensitivity to temperature changes in foods and beverages.
  • Bad breath and a nasty taste.

A severe dental abscess can cause other symptoms, including:

  • Facial swelling.
  • Fever.
  • A sore throat and difficulties swallowing.
  • Problems opening your mouth.
  • A sense of being very unwell.

Can I Treat a Sore Gum at Home?

Some home remedies can help relieve gum pain in one spot, but you will most certainly need professional dental care.

Potential remedies include:

  1. A warm saltwater rinse made by dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in warm water. You can use this to rinse your mouth several times a day.
  2. Antiseptic mouthwash can help control bacterial buildup, and particularly mouthwash containing chlorhexidine.
  3. Over-the-counter pain relief can provide temporary relief from gum pain.

However, the most effective treatment is to contact NYC Dentistry Center to arrange an appointment.

Dental Treatment for Gum Pain in One Spot

When you visit our dental practice, we can gently examine your mouth and the affected gum. We may take diagnostic X-rays to assess the issue more clearly before providing a custom treatment plan.

Since gum pain is often due to bacterial infection, we may recommend a variety of treatments, including:

  1. A dental hygiene appointment to professionally clean your teeth and remove plaque, tartar, and accumulated bacteria.
  2. Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment for mild to moderate periodontal disease.
  3. Antibiotics are prescribed for issues like a dental abscess or when treating severe periodontal disease.
  4. Root canal therapy can be used to remove bacteria from infected root canals. This can be a good treatment if provided before a dental abscess develops
  5. Draining a dental abscess may be necessary to get rid of pus buildup.
  6. Tooth extraction may be needed when a dental abscess is severe, particularly if it has become life-threatening. Removing the tooth will allow the infection to drain properly.

Preventing Gum Pain

Ideally, we strongly recommend that everyone have a dental checkup every six months or more frequently if they have any dental or medical issues. These regular checks enable us to address problems early on, before they can become more severe. Practicing good oral hygiene at home will help prevent any problems from arising.

If you experience any issues between dental exams, such as persistent gum pain, tooth pain, or mouth sores that last longer than a week, please get in touch with us for immediate help and advice.
